In the Name of Allāh, the Ever Merciful, the Bestower of Mercy
A Clarification on the Vileness of Abandoning Consultation and the Evils of Self-Delusion
Abdurraḥmān bin Nāṣir as-Saʿdī (رحمه الله) said:
“Consultation removes arrogance and self-deception from a servant. A person who is arrogant, self-obsessed, and infatuated with his own opinion neither consults others, nor accepts advice from an advisor, and becomes harsh toward those who counsel him.
This is a most despicable trait, and its harm is immense.
An arrogant person, infatuated with his own opinion, will be stubborn, go astray, and walk about believing he is upon the right path. This is because the fantasy of self-deception does not allow a person to see his faults, correct them, recognise his shortcomings, or resolve them.
Frequent consultation and accepting the opinions of those who wish for success are the marks of intelligence and humility. Making decisions based on whim and rejecting the advice of those who wish for success are the marks of ignorance and self-deception.”
